  7.     Boeing has made a detailed analysis of the record of
  8. worldwide airplane accidents and has come to a downbeat
  9. conclusion: the annual number of fatal, "hull loss" crashes may
  10. reach 20 to 25 by 2005. (The 1980-89 average: roughly 13 a
  11. year.) In other words, the world could face a massive air
  12. catastrophe every two to three weeks. Why? Boeing concludes
  13. that while traffic in the sky is increasing, the installation
  14. of cockpit warning systems and landing-guidance devices is not.
  15. The survey found that flight-crew error was ruled responsible
  16. for 73% of fatal accidents. Of these, 41% occurred during
  17. landings, often because of unstable approaches. Among other
  18. remedies, Boeing endorses worldwide use of pilot warning
  19. systems. It also urges airlines to monitor all flight-recorder
  20. data and review performances with the crews. Most foreign
  21. carriers -- but none in the U.S. -- do this now.
